uGet – An awesome multi-platform download manager

uGet is a simple, lightweight and easy-to-use download manager written in GTK+ that comes with categories download, can download torrent and metalink files through aria2, supports resume downloads and many more. I would like to thank Mr.Michael Tunnell to let me know about this application by commenting on my previous post about Flareget download manager.

  • Resume downloads.
  • Queue downloads.
  • Classify download in categories.
  • Firefox integration with flashgot.
  • Clipboard monitoring.
  • import download from HTML files.
  • Multiple/batch download.
  • Command line download tool.
  • Multi-language support.

Installation of uGet in Linux mint and Ubuntu:

uGet is included in the Ubuntu and Linuxmint repositories by default or you can download manually from here. Also you can install using PPA. Press CTRL+ALT+T to open Terminal and add its PPA.
  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:plushuang-tw/uget-stable

Update the software sources list.
  • sudo apt-get update

Install uGet.
  • sudo apt-get install uget

You can launch the application from the Unity dash or Menu or from the Terminal.
The main window.

Integration with Mozilla Firefox:

You can integrate uGet in firefox using flashgot add-on. To do that navigate to Tools in the firefox, select Flashgot and click More Options.
Now the FlashGot options window will open. Navigate to FlashGot Media and Select uGet from the Download Manager drop-down box.
Now Uget is integrated with Firefox browser. You can use uGet as your default download manager.

Download Torrent files using uGet:

Well, you don’t need a separate torrent downloader software to download torrents. uGet will do it for you through aria2. You should install aria2 to download torrents.
  • sudo apt-get install aria2

Enable the aria2 under Plug-in section of uGet settings page.
Now you can download torrent files.
Let us download a sample torrent file. To do that goto File –> New –> Torrent in uGet application. Select the torrent you want to download. It may show a error “Message: aria2.getVersion result error”
Don’t get panic. Open your Terminal enter the below command.
  • sudo aria2c –daemon –enable-rpc=true

Start the download again. Boom!! Now the torrent file will begin to download. Hope the developers will fix this error in the upcoming version.
Thats it. Have a good day!!!

  1. Thank you for featuring our app and we will certainly look into that error.

The only thing I would mention is that uGet does support Multi-Connetion (aka multi-segment) via the aria2 plugin.

I should really update that features list on the site. :)

  2. I needed an accelerated download manager for Linux, i.e., one that would break a large file into segments so as to speed up the download time. uGet with aria2 does that and I’m very happy with it! Thanks!
