AlmaLinux Launches M&E SIG for VFX and Post-Production

The AlmaLinux community recently announced the creation of its newest group: the Media and Entertainment Special Interest Group (M&E SIG). This group is established to address recent licensing disruptions affecting the visual effects (VFX) and post-production industries.

The M&E SIG's core mission is to certify and enhance AlmaLinux, so it becomes the trusted, production-ready Linux platform for studios requiring high stability and robust performance.

This work involves collaboration between artists and engineers to develop reference architectures, ensure compatibility with industry applications like Maya and Houdini, and document best practices for studio workflows.

Interested individuals are encouraged to contribute to the group's goals, which include testing, packaging, and documenting configurations for render farms and high-performance workstations.

As you already know, AlmaLinux is an Open Source and forever-free enterprise Linux distribution. Since AlmaLinux OS is binary compatible with RHEL, it offers the enterprise reliability that the M&E industry requires.

The Urgent Need for a Stable Platform

The Media & Entertainment industry currently faces significant disruption. Established platform providers have implemented recent changes regarding licensing and support costs, which has seriously affected the software ecosystem.

This situation has created an urgent demand for a stable, community-owned, enterprise-grade Linux distribution. AlmaLinux is clearly positioned to fill this gap.

The M&E SIG acts as the essential bridge, connecting the AlmaLinux community directly with the requirements of the M&E sector.

The Mission of the M&E SIG

The primary goal of the Media & Entertainment SIG is to establish AlmaLinux as the trusted, production-ready Linux platform for studios of any size. This group functions as a central collaboration hub, bringing together artists, engineers, and open-source developers.

This collective work directly addresses the unique requirements of modern production pipelines. The SIG's efforts aim to integrate the needs of artists and engineers into the AlmaLinux ecosystem, making it a clear, long-term choice for production.

Key Deliverables and Focus Areas

The SIG's work plan focuses on critical infrastructure and compatibility needs specific to studio environments:

1. Certification and Compatibility:

The group will work to ensure key industry-standard applications run smoothly on AlmaLinux. This includes important tools like Nuke, Houdini, Maya, and Blender.

2. Reference Architectures:

Studios will gain documented reference builds and architectures. These guides will cover configuring high-performance workstations, secure storage systems, and massive render farms.

The documentation also extends to hybrid and on-prem M&E pipelines, focusing on networking, storage, and render farms.

3. Best Practices:

They plan to publish important guidelines for production environments. These best practices include security hardening, performance tuning, and reliability.

4. Community Contributions:

The group focuses heavily on technical contributions. This includes:

  • Packaging: Building and packaging ASWF projects into RPMs. They also create automation playbooks for pipeline tools and storage.
  • Testing and Benchmarking: Running validation tests and publishing performance data for hardware and workloads.
  • Upstream Collaboration: Working with ASWF project teams to contribute patches and provide feedback.

    Timeline and Industry Involvement

The work has started immediately. The M&E SIG's initial focus for Q1 2026 involves documenting the AlmaLinux workstation and render farm configurations. The group expects to publish official reference architectures and compatibility guidelines for M&E studios by mid-to-late 2026.

The SIG currently holds virtual meetings monthly on the first Wednesday of every month at 16:00 UTC. This meeting time accommodates members across Europe and Canadian time zones. The founding members reflect strong industry participation, including representatives from Disney Animation Studios, Cinesite, AWS M&E, and SHED Inc..

Individuals interested in contributing expertise in systems engineering, pipeline TD, packaging, or technical artistry are highly encouraged to join. They can get involved by attending a meeting or engaging on Mattermost in the~sig-media-entertainment room.
