This week has been a big one for GNOME fans! The team has announced the release of GNOME 47, a major update packed with lots of new features and improvements. GNOME 47 brings stylish accent colors, a more user-friendly Files app, better support for smaller screens, and fresh dialog styles. But that's not all! Here are some other exciting things that happened this week in the world of GNOME.

GNOME Apps Get a Refresh

1. Loupe (Image Viewer):

Loupe version 47 has some small improvements, but get ready for big changes in Loupe 48! You can expect image editing features and a completely new look.

2. Libadwaita:

This is the foundation for modern GNOME apps, and it got some important updates:

  • Toggle groups now replace linked boxes of exclusive toggle buttons, making the API cleaner and the style less confusing.
  • An inline view switcher using a toggle group works with AdwViewStack (instead of GtkStack), providing a smoother crossfade transition.
  • The bottom bar in AdwBottomSheet can now be hidden, which is great for empty states, like in music players.
  • A new property allows banners to be added to preference pages.
  • AdwTimedAnimation gets a boost with several new cubic bezier easing functions.

3. GNOME Shell:

Thanks to an STF grant, GNOME Shell now has better focus stealing prevention, which was detailed in a new blog post.

4. Calendar:

GNOME Calendar 47.0 is here with many user-focused enhancements:

  • You can now drag and drop ICS files directly into Calendar.
  • The app has a more modern look with various widgets updated to their Adwaita equivalents.
  • Hidden calendars are now more clearly marked with an "eye-not-looking" icon.
  • Enhanced performance and reduced power consumption due to delayed search activation.
  • A redesigned and more informative Event popover.
  • A streamlined about dialog using AdwAboutDialog.new_from_appdata, making it easier to include release notes.

GNOME Circle Expands with New Apps

1. Binary:

Say hello to Binary, a new app in the GNOME Circle. This app makes it easy to work with numbers in different bases, like binary and hexadecimal.

2. Eyedropper:

After nearly a year, Eyedropper is back with a big update:

  • A brand-new color editor for modifying picked colors.
  • A completely overhauled color system using the palette library for more accurate color conversions.
  • A helpful warning page if your system doesn't allow color picking.

Third-Party Projects

1. Flood It:

A brand new, simple yet addictive strategy game where your goal is to flood the entire board with a single color in as few moves as possible.

2. Embellish:

This font management tool is back, now ported from Go to Gjs. Expect a smaller bundle size, font previews, font licenses, and a welcoming welcome screen!

3. Mahjongg:

Version 47.0 of this classic tile game introduces:

  • A refreshed UI aligned with the latest GNOME Human Interface Guidelines.
  • The ability to add player names to scores and clear previous scores.
  • Faster game startup times.
  • A fix for unclickable tiles in the "Overpass" layout.
