Table of Contents
Major Desktop Environment Changes
KDE Plasma 6 by Default
ROME 24.07 features KDE Plasma 6 as the default desktop environment, offering a modern and intuitive user experience.
Spins and Variants
In addition to the default Plasma 6 desktop, users can use alternative spins featuring LXQt 2.0.0 (Qt6) and GNOME 46.3.
A special ROME Plasma6 Wayland ISO is also available, although it's important to know that Wayland is not yet mature enough to replace X11 by default for most users.
Users should note that the Wayland ISO may not work in VirtualBox, often booting to a black screen. However, it functions well on most hardware and in QEmu with KVM.
Enhanced MS Windows Compatibility
OpenMandriva now offers improved options for running Windows applications.
The standard Wine Windows emulator remains available. Proton and Proton-experimental, usually used for Windows games in Steam, are now OpenMandriva packages. This marks the first time Proton is available outside Steam without non-free code.
OM-Welcome, A Centralized Configuration Tool
OM-Welcome, the new Startup and Configuration tool, combines the features of oma-welcome and om-control-center to provide a convenient, all-in-one starting point for configuring the system and installing software.
