Linux Kernel 7.2 RC3 Released: Testing the “New Normal”

Linus Torvalds released the third release candidate (RC3) for Linux Kernel 7.2 on Sunday, July 12, 2026. This latest version highlights a steady pace of work as the team moves further into the summer testing phase.

Finding a "New Normal"

Linus Torvalds described this stage of development as a "new normal". Currently, the Linux Kernel sees slightly higher rates of code commits than in the past. However, summer vacations for many developers are balancing out this high activity.

Despite the busy schedule, the development cycle remains healthy. In the Linux 7.2-rc3 announcement mail, Linus noted that "nothing looks particularly scary or strange" with this specific update.

What is Inside the Update?

As we have seen in previous weeks, drivers make up about half of the new changes. While GPU and networking drivers always receive updates, this version also contains a fair amount of miscellaneous driver "noise" from across the tree.

Beyond drivers, developers focused their efforts on several key areas:

  • Networking and Filesystems: These represent the largest sections of the update outside of hardware drivers.
  • Core Systems: The patch includes fixes for the core kernel and various hardware architectures.
  • Tooling and Documentation: This release features several documentation fixes. Interestingly, some of these updates simply involve fixing indentation to make the files easier to read.

Linux 7.2 Major Milestones

This third release candidate builds upon the massive foundation laid earlier in the 7.2 cycle. During the RC1 phase, the Linux kernel source tree officially surpassed 43 million total lines. Much of this bulk comes from the AMDGPU driver, which currently stands at over 6.3 million lines.

Furthermore, RC3 continues the refinement process following the "monster header" cleanup in Linux 7.2 RC2. By splitting large files like mod_devicetable.h into smaller pieces, the team has made the kernel much more efficient to compile.

Now that RC3 is available, the most important task is testing. Linus encouraged the community to "go forth and test" to ensure everything works correctly on different types of hardware.

Users can find the code in the Official Linux Kernel Archives or the Linus Torvalds' Git tree.

Stay tuned for more updates as we move closer to the final stable release of Linux 7.2!
