Linus Torvalds announced the release of seventh release candidate (RC7) for the upcoming Linux Kernel 7.0 on April 5, 2026. In the Linux 7.0-rc7 announcement mail, Torvalds has confirmed that the finish line is in sight, with the final release expected next weekend.

While this development cycle has been busier than usual, Torvalds noted that there are "no big surprises" in this final release candidate.

A Productive but Busy Cycle

This entire release cycle has followed a strange pattern. After the first version, every weekly update has been larger than usual.

Earlier in the month, Torvalds even called the progress "unnerving" because it refused to calm down. He eventually suspected that the jump to a new major number—version 7.0—might be a "psychological result" that encouraged developers to be more active.

Despite the high volume of work, the code remains "benign" and safe. In fact, nearly half of the rc7 update consists of drivers, which is a very normal distribution for this stage. The rest of the patch covers core networking, security fixes, and filesystem improvements.

Key Technical Improvements in Linux 7.0-rc7

Even though the update is mostly about polish, the community addressed several important issues to ensure a smooth launch.

  • Better Hardware Support: Drivers for GPUs, networking, and USB devices make up the bulk of the changes. For instance, developers added "quirks" or special settings to help TUXEDO and Framework laptops run more efficiently. Additionally, the team fixed a synchronization error for the dummy-hcd USB driver and resolved a locking bug for Synaptics touchpads.
  • Security and Stability: This release fixes several "out-of-bounds" errors that could cause system crashes. Specifically, the team patched memory issues in ksmbd (file sharing) and iwlwifi (wireless networking). Furthermore, developers resolved race conditions in Bluetooth and overflows in IPv6 networking.
  • Rust Integration: The kernel continues to improve its use of the Rust programming language. This update refines the "Rust binder" to ensure safer memory operations across the system.

Download and Test Linux Kernel 7.0 RC7

If everything goes according to plan, we should see the official, stable release of Linux 7.0 next weekend i.e. April 12, 2026.

As usual, Torvalds has urged the community to continue thorough testing during these last few days. The Linux Kernel RC7 version can be downloaded from the Kernel.org website or the Linus Torvalds's git tree.

If you are a developer or a tech enthusiast, please help testing this candidate. Your feedback helps ensure that the final 7.0 version works for everyone, not just on the machines of the core developers.
