The next LTS (Long-Term support) Ubuntu 16.04, code named Xenial Xerus, hits the alpha 1 stage. This alpha features images for Lubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, and UbuntuKylin. hence it is still in early development stage, it is not for normal users who wants to use it in their production environment. It is strongly recommend for developers those who want to help in testing, reporting and fixing bugs as we work towards getting this release ready.
The final stable version will be released on 21 April 2016.
Ubuntu 16.04 alpha 1 and its flavours are ships with Linux kernel 4.3. However, the final releases will ship with the Linux kernel 4.4 LTS, which is expected on January 10, 2016.
Here is the important dates of release schedule.
- Alpha 1 : 31 December
- Alpha 2 : 28 January
- Feature Freeze : 18 February
- Beta 1 : 25 February
- UserInterface Freeze : 10 March
- Final Beta : 04 March
- Kernel Freeze : 07 April
- Release Candidate : 14 April
- Final release : 21 April
