System76 released COSMIC Epoch version 1.0.8 , a Rust-written Desktop environment for their in-house Pop!_OS Linux distribution on February 24, 2026. This update is part of the "Epoch 1" rolling release cycle. It focuses on making the system faster, fixing annoying bugs, and adding clever features to your favorite apps.

Speeding Up Your COSMIC Desktop
Performance is a main goal for this version. For example, the COSMIC Store now feels much faster because it loads pages instantly after you first view them. The developers changed how the store works so it no longer refreshes every time you move between pages.
Additionally, your desktop background will load more quickly. The system now creates color gradients in parallel, which saves time. Even the COSMIC Files applet uses less video memory (VRAM) now, leaving more power for your other apps.
COSMIC Epoch 1.0.8 Ships with Smarter Apps for Daily Work
The core apps you use every day received several helpful upgrades:
- COSMIC Files: You can now copy a file path quickly by holding the Shift key. The app also prevents mistakes by graying out the "Paste" button if your clipboard is empty. If you like a clean sidebar, you can now clear your recent file history with one click.
- COSMIC Terminal: Reading text is now easier because the team updated the Light theme with better color contrast. You can also right-click to copy a link or use a new command that helps apps like GitHub Desktop open the terminal in the right folder.
- COSMIC Player: Your music player is now more intuitive. For instance, the app automatically unmutes itself the moment you turn up the volume.
Fixing the Little Things
Small bugs can ruin a good experience, so version 1.0.8 fixes many of them. One important fix stops VLC from freezing during certain system tasks. The Wi-Fi login box is also better because it automatically selects the password field so you can start typing immediately.
The system also handles time better. By using a new tool called jiff, COSMIC now correctly manages daylight settings for people living in the extreme North or South. Furthermore, the system compositor now remembers if you had your windows maximized or snapped to the side after you restart.
Future Releases
While version 1.0.8 makes Epoch 1 very stable, the team is already planning for Epoch 2. That future update will include a massive technical change to "reactive rendering". This change aims to cut CPU usage by 60% to 80%, making your computer even more efficient.
You can get these updates now on Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS as they pass final testing. If you use a different Linux version, look for the tagged 1.0.8 release from your package manager.
