KDE's Plasma 6.2 has already been released this week! While there are a few regressions being tracked, most notably around external monitor brightness and multi-screen performance, the overall release is good and very solid.

The Plasma team is already hard at work addressing these issues, with details on the causes and learnings to be shared later. In the meantime, let's take a closer look at this week's notable changes in Plasma.

UI Improvements and Notable Bug Fixes

One of the key UI improvements addresses unintentional extra padding around elements in the System Settings' Touchpad page. This fix enhances the visual appeal and user experience of this settings section.

Several bug fixes have been implemented to address regressions introduced in previous versions. These include:

  • Pop-up positioning: Fixed an issue where pop-ups from widgets on the Plasma panel were partially off-screen, specifically when the parent panel was small and positioned against the left or top screen edge.
  • Brightness control: Addressed a regression in the "control all screens' brightness" feature, which caused duplication of the brightness slider for certain external screens.
  • Window focus: Two minor regressions related to window focus on multi-monitor setups have been resolved.
  • Virtual desktop switcher: The virtual desktop switcher OSD now appears as expected, fixing a porting regression.
  • Clipboard functionality: A regression causing the first clipboard entry to be temporarily unremovable after editing has been fixed.
  • Auto-mounted encrypted disks: Auto-mounted encrypted disks now correctly appear in Plasma's Disks & Devices widget.

System Stability and Performance Enhancements

The Plasma team has also focused on improving system stability and performance. Several Plasma crashes affecting the System Tray and Disks & Devices widget have been addressed. Additional fixes include:

  • Brightness-related code crash: A potential crash in brightness-related code has been resolved.
  • Screen recording issue: Screen recordings in Spectacle using the VP9 codec on slower systems are no longer cut off at the end.
  • System Monitor widget: Configuration pages of System Monitor widgets are now scrollable when needed.
  • Login/logout issue: A bug preventing system logout within the first 50 seconds after login, specifically when the splash screen was disabled, has been fixed.
  • Wallpapers page title: The Wallpapers page in System Settings now displays its title correctly.

Performance enhancements include optimized launch speed for Discover, ensuring a faster and more responsive experience. Additionally, the Baloo file indexer no longer attempts to index .obj 3D model files, improving indexing efficiency.
