Linus Torvalds recently announced the release of third release candidate (RC3) for the upcoming Linux Kernel 6.17 on 24 August 2025. Linux 6.17-rc3 offers another step towards a stable 6.17 kernel, following a period of focused bug squashing and minor enhancements.

Linus, despite travelling for family reasons, managed to keep the release on its usual Sunday afternoon schedule. In the Linux 6,17-rc3 release announcement mail, Linus noted that this particular release had "slightly unusual timing".

Note: There is typo in the official announcement. In the subject of the mail, Kernel version is mentioned as 3.17-rc3, but it should be 6.17-rc3.

What's New in Linux 6.17-rc3?

This release candidate arrived "a bit larger than usual", naturally balancing out the previous "tiny rc2". Developers did not genuinely believe that the kernel was as good as the smaller -rc2 made it seem, thus making a larger -rc3 expected.

Fortunately, Linus confirmed it was "by no means anything outrageously so", remaining well within normal expectations for this stage. He stated that "things seem fairly normal for this phase in the release cycle" and that the 6.17 series appears "generally in pretty good shape".

Let's break down some of the key areas receiving attention:

  • Drivers Lead the Way: Around half of all fixes focused on various drivers. Mellanox mlx5 drivers received significant attention, but engineers also tackled issues across SCSI, GPU, i2c, and USB components.
  • Filesystem Fortifications: Developers applied numerous fixes to several filesystems. For instance, Btrfs saw improvements in race-free commit root updates, hole detection, inode eviction, and mount option information messages. Ext4 also gained fixes for i_version options, SB_I_VERSION preservation, and softlockup prevention in jbd2.
  • Core Networking and Beyond: The team addressed core networking issues, enhancing areas like netfilter, mptcp, and Bluetooth. Importantly, they also added "a fair chunk of added selftests" to ensure robust functionality.
  • Memory Management and Architecture: Fixes included memory leaks in pidfs and signal, along with updates to mremap and hugetlb_cgroup. Architecture-specific changes involved LoongArch KVM updates and x86 SRSO mitigation.
  • Rust Language Support: The release also includes "some more Rust support", showing a continued embrace of the language within the kernel's development.

Try Linux Kernel 6.17-rc3

As usual, Linus Torvalds concluded the release announcement by encouraging users to continue testing the latest 6.17-rc3 release and to report any issues.

If you're interested to try this release, you can get the latest Linux Kernel 6.17 RC3 from the Kernel.org website or the Linus Torvalds's git tree.

Overall, Linux 6.17-rc3 signals a steady and positive progression for the kernel. The development community continues to refine and stabilise the codebase, ensuring a robust foundation for future Linux users.

Linus hopes for another quiet week, indicating a desire for continued smooth sailing towards the final 6.17 release. The final release date for Linux Kernel 6.17 could be September 28, 2025.

Keep testing, and help make Linux even better!
