FreeBSD 15 Alpha 2 Is Officially Released For Testing

The FreeBSD team released the second alpha build for the upcoming FreeBSD 15.0 release cycle for testing. This follows closely on the heels of the first alpha, which landed just last week on September 7, 2025.

The FreeBSD 15 ALPHA2 brings some really exciting changes and hints at a much more desktop-friendly experience.

What's New in FreeBSD 15 Alpha 2 Release?

This latest alpha build, officially available since September 14, 2025, ships with a few important improvements.

First, developers worked hard to make builds properly reproducible. This means you can count on consistent results every time. Furthermore, the install media now includes pkgbase repositories. This makes managing packages much smoother from the start.

Like any early alpha, there are also a few bumps.

For example, the powerpc64 and powerpc64le builds did not work for ALPHA2. The good news is that the team is already investigating these issues and expects to fix them for ALPHA3.

Also, you cannot use the freebsd-update(8) tool to upgrade to ALPHA1, but the team hopes to enable it for ALPHA3.

Built-in KDE Plasma Option in the FreeBSD Installer!

Perhaps the most thrilling development for many users revolves around the FreeBSD 15.0 installer. Soon, you will find an option to install a full KDE Plasma desktop directly!

This is truly big news because FreeBSD has not offered a desktop environment right out of the box before. Imagine clicking a button during install and getting a complete desktop ready to go!

Many users are very happy about this choice!

People often find KDE Plasma a great desktop environment. It is modern, well-built, and easy to learn, especially for those familiar with a Windows-like way of working.

Indeed, it is an excellent choice as a default, and you can expect a good general-purpose desktop experience. The FreeBSD Foundation is actively supporting this, making sure KDE works well for new users.

This new installer option is part of a bigger effort to make FreeBSD better for laptops and desktops.

The project focuses on improving things like modern suspend features, better Wi-Fi support (AX is coming, AC already works!), and, of course, a helpful GUI option in the installer.

Wayland on FreeBSD

Additionally, exciting progress continues with Wayland. KDE Plasma 6 Wayland on FreeBSD is already working. Wayland is becoming the future of graphics for open-source operating systems, moving beyond the older X11 system.

While Wayland works, a small "Ctrl+C bug" sometimes causes crashes when using Wayland with SDDM. Nevertheless, a simple workaround lets you launch KDE Wayland perfectly from the command line.

Also, developers are talking about making Wayland a default or at least an easy option in the installer. This means better, smoother graphics for everyone in the future.

Download and Test FreeBSD 15.0 ALPHA2!

The FreeBSD 15.0 release cycle has many more alpha and beta builds planned. This is your chance to try out these new features!

You can download the latest FreeBSD 15 ALPHA2 installation images for various architectures, including amd64, armv7, aarch64, and riscv64.

Here are the specific locations to download the images:

For amd64 and aarch64, these can also be conveniently fetched from Docker Hub or GitHub Container Registry using commands like:

podman pull docker.io/freebsd/freebsd-runtime:15.snap

Or,

podman pull ghcr.io/freebsd/freebsd-runtime:15.snap

Amazon EC2 AMI IDs for FreeBSD/amd64 and FreeBSD/aarch64 can be retrieved from the Systems Manager Parameter Store via the AWS CLI using specific keys, such as /aws/service/freebsd/amd64/base/ufs/15.0/ALPHA2.

As I already stated earlier, the powerpc64 and powerpc64le builds for ALPHA2 failed due to pkgbase build issues and are currently under investigation, with expected fixes for ALPHA3.

Also, the freebsd-update(8) utility cannot be used to upgrade to 15.0-ALPHA1, but it is anticipated to be usable for upgrading to 15.0-ALPHA3.

If you want to help make FreeBSD 15.0 the best release yet, please download and test this new alpha.
